The primary responsibilities of the Torngat Joint Fisheries Board are to make recommendations in relation to the conservation of species, stocks of fish, aquatic plants, fish habitat, and the management of fisheries in the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area.
The Torngat Joint Fisheries Board (TJFB) works in partnership with Inuit communities, government bodies, and stakeholders to promote sustainable fisheries. Through co-management, we integrate traditional Inuit knowledge with scientific research to support healthy fish populations and thriving aquatic ecosystems.
Protecting aquatic habitats is crucial for the long-term health of fish species and the ecosystems they depend on. TJFB develops and supports initiatives that safeguard freshwater and marine environments, ensuring the resilience of these vital habitats for future generations.
TJFB plays a key role in recommending sustainable harvest levels for fish stocks within the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area. Our approach balances ecological health with the cultural and economic needs of Inuit communities, promoting responsible fisheries management practices rooted in sustainability.
